北海道 (
Hiragana: ほっかいどう
Romaji: Ho-kka-i-do-u) one of the four main islands of the
Japanese archipelago and is located at the northern end.
The Japanese often say that its shape resembles a horse facing east.
Hokkaido lies beyond 40 degrees north, a unique position in East Asia. The cold climate gives it the nickname 雪国 (
Hiragana: ゆきぐに
Romaji: Yu-ki-gu-ni), or "snow country" in Japanese.
