Introduction of 一:
What kanji set is 一 in?:
Kanji 一 is in the 学習漢字 (Gakusyu kanji), a subset of the 常用漢字 (Joyou kanji).
Kanji 一 is studied in Japanese elementary schools at the first-grade level. Mastering all the Gakusyu kanji is a requirement for graduation.
漢数字 Kanji numerals:
In the Japanese school curriculum, there are two ways of writing the numbers: using kanji numerals ( 一 二 三 四) or using Arabic numerals (1 2 3 4).
Kanji numerals are called 漢数字 (かんすうじ Kansuuji), used in traditional writing.
Arabic numerals are called アラビア数字 (あらびあすうじ Arabiasuuji), used in math and science writing.
数え方 Reading numbers:
In the Japanese school curriculum, there are two ways of reading the numbers: onnyomi and kunnyomi. Onnyomi comes from the Chinese sound, and kunnyomi comes from the native Japanese sound.
How to determine readning いち or ひとつ:
一 (いち Ichi) is onnyomi and 一つ (ひとつ Hitotsu) is kunnyomi. To determine the reading in the sentence, kunnyomi is always written as 一つ, not 一. By adding つ after 一, native Japanese speakers can judge kanji's reading.
音便 Phonetic shift:
The kanji 一 (いち) is often combined with other kanji to form a compound kanji. For instance, 一 is combined with 分 (ふん) to form 一分 (いっぷん) or combined with 個 (こ) to form 一個 (いっこ).
In such compound words, いち is phonetically shifted to いっ to make it easier to pronounce. 一分 is いっぷん, not いちふん. 一個 is いっこ, not いちこ.
This kind of phonetic shift is called 音便 (おんびん Onnbin) in Japanese grammatical terms.
