구개음화. [구개음화] to [구개으뫄]. gugae-eum-hwa to gugae-eu-mwa.
Palatization.
해설 Commentary:
구개음화 [gugae-eumwa] is one of the Korean sound shifts.
When 구개음화 [gugae-eumwa] happens, 디 [di] becomes 지 [ji] and 티 [ti] becomes 치 [chi].
For example, the Korean word 같이 sounds 가치 [ka-chi], not 가티 [ka-ti]. 티 [ti] in 가티 [ka-ti] changes into 치 [chi] in 가치 [ka-chi].
Example of 구개음화 Palatization:
해돋이. [해돋이] to [해도지]. hae-dot-i to hae-do-ji.
Sunrise.
해돋이 [hae-do-ji] means "sunrise" in Korean.
The correct pronunciation of 해돋이 is 해도지 [hae-do-ji], and 해도디 [hae-do-di] is incorrect.
In this case, ㄷ받침 [di-geut batchim] follows after 이 [i], so 구개음화 [gugae-eu-mwa] = palatization occurs. As a result, the 디 [di] sound changes into the 지 [ji] sound.
같이. [같이] to [가치]. gat-i to ga-chi.
Together.
같이 [ga-chi] means "together" in Korean.
The correct pronunciation of 같이 is 가치 [ga-chi], and 가티 [ga-ti] is incorrect.
In this case, ㅌ받침 [ti-eut batchim] follows after 이 [i], so 구개음화 [gugae-eu-mwa] = palatization occurs. As a result, the 티 [ti] sound changes into the 치 [chi] sound.
굳이. [굳이] to [구지]. gud-i to gu-ji.
Disturbingly. Taking the trouble.
굳이 [gu-ji] is an adverb and it means "disturbingly" or "taking the trouble" in Korean.
The correct pronunciation of 굳이 is 구지 [gu-ji], and 구디 [gu-di] is incorrect.
In this case, ㄷ받침 [di-geut batchim] follows after 이 [i], so 구개음화 [gugae-eu-mwa] = palatization occurs. As a result, the 디 [di] sound changes into the 지 [ji] sound.
붙이다. [붙이다] to [부치다]. but-ida to bu-chida.
To attach.
붙이다 [bu-chida] means "to attach" in Korean.
The correct pronunciation of 붙이다 is 부치다 [putida], and 부티다 [putida] is incorrect.
In this case, ㅌ받침 [ti-eut batchim] follows after 이 [i], so 구개음화 [gugae-eu-mwa] = palatization occurs. As a result, the 티 [ti] sound changes into the 치 [chi] sound.
붙이다 [bu-chida] is transitive verb while 붙다 [but-tta] is intransitive verb.
핥이다. [핥이다] to [할치다]. halt-ida to hal-chida.
To be licked.
핥이다 [hal-chida] means "to be licked" in Korean.
The correct pronunciation of 핥이다 is 할치다 [hal-chida], and 할티다 [hal-tida] is incorrect.
In this case, ㅌ받침 [ti-eut batchim] follows after 이 [i], so 구개음화 [gugae-eu-mwa] = palatization occurs. As a result, the 티 [ti] sound changes into the 치 [chi] sound.
The verb 핥이다 [hal-chida] is the passive form of the verb 핥다 [hal-ta], meaning "to lick" in Korean.
핥다 [hal-ta] and 핥이다 [hal-chida] can be insulting, so be careful when you use these words.
